Interesting. The birds swim around using a “snorkelling” style of hunting. Their face is looking down in the water in search of food. When they see something. they dive down.
Nice sequence of pictures. I’m doing some informal research into snorkelling behaviour and would like to ask some questions about your image sequence. For instance, where did this sequence take place, how deep was the water, were there other mergansers nearby, …
The birds were at Marina Park, Thunder Bay ON. Its on Lake Superior. I can’t remember what part of the shoreline where this took place. Best guess just off the Tai Chi Circle area. Not sure how deep the water is there but you can see the bottom. Close to shore. I doubt there were other birds around or I would have photographed them as well.
