The following are photos I took today around the Whalen Building. These were taken at ground level. I believe they are fairly indicative of what is going on at higher levels of the exterior also. Not great.
As you can see, there is a lot of cracking of the Terracotta exterior shell. Weather has had its way for way far too long and the deterioration will increase expotenbtially from now on. This is a prime example of what happens when a heritage building’s maintenance is neglected. Little repairs become BIG repairs.
This also falls under the City infrastructure deficit. I am afraid that the $15 million infrastructure deficit quoted in the media is only the tip of the iceberg. How many buildings does the city own?
Is $6 million to $10 million a reasonable quote for the replacement the entire exterior of the Whalen Building? I thought not but after having a look at it…..
Five years ago, the cost likely was a million or two. Tops. Maybe less. Not cheap but reasonable. Another Thunder Bay heritage building on the ropes because of neglect.
