Fire hall construction delayed due to weather

By tbnewswatch.com

Plans to build a new fire hall in the city have hit a small glitch.

The project on the corner of Frederica Street and Neebing Avenue will be delayed for three months due to weather issues.

The city had to decide if they wanted to go ahead with building the new Westfort fire hall during the winter months, or hold off until spring.  Construction began in September, but the foundation hasn’t yet been laid.

That requires temperature sensitive construction work, which is hard to do at this time of the year.

Gerry Broere, the city’s manager of construction services, says construction is going well with the other two fire hall projects.

The new Neebing station on 20th Sideroad is on schedule and likely to be opened in July.

And the expansion on James Street is ahead of schedule and likely to be completed in February.

Broere adds the delay in Westfort should not cause the city to run over their projected budget.

“The city had to decide if they wanted to go ahead with building the new Westfort fire hall during the winter months, or hold off until spring.  Construction began in September, but the foundation hasn’t yet been laid……..”

Think about that for a minute.  Its now almost the end of Decemeber.  Apparently, after almost four months (three for sure) of construction on the Neebing and Frederica Street Fire Hall, the foundation has not yet been completed. Or maybe even not yet begun? Ther foundation. The thing that everything is built on.  You know…the foundation.

WTF is going on here?  And the winter weather is a surprize?  Really?  In Thunder Bay where winter has been around since….FOREVER!  Cold and snowy? Nobody thought that it might be cold and snowy?

I believe that cold and snowy were used as excuses for cost overruns during construction of Prince Arthur’s Landing. Then there is the distinct possibility of the winter roads budget going over budget because of, drum roll please, snow. Not record setting snowfalls mind you. No. Sigh…

And to think that I have been busy ranting about delays in constructing something as simple as a bus shelters.

And everyone at City Hall gets a pay raise.
