Thunder Bay – Manufacturing Consent

manufacturing-consent_4

manufacture of consent – the practice of controlling or manipulating the norms, values etc. held by an audience by controlling what they are exposed to in the media. This could be done by a government or other institution in authority. – dictionarycentral.com

The propaganda model is a conceptual model in political economy advanced by Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomskythat states (In their book Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media) how propaganda, including systemic biases, function in mass media. The model seeks to explain how populations are manipulated and how consent for economic, social and political policies is “manufactured” in the public mind due to this propaganda.

The theory posits that the way in which news is structured (through advertising, media ownership, government sourcing and others) creates an inherent conflict of interest which acts as propaganda for undemocratic forces. – wikipedia.org, Manufacturing_Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media

Any of that sound familiar?  Sound like the media in Thunder Bay?

Thunder Bay is especially vulnerable to this type of manipulation because of the limited media outlets that exist here.  Also, the majority of the local media is controlled by two companies.

As I pointed out in a recent post,  Thunder Bay’s economy is completely dependent on government money.  Local media is completely dependent on government sources for local news items.  Any news outlet that offends any government risks being cutoff from a major source of local news content.

Chronicle Journal?  Dougall Media?  Have either ever offended local government?  Have either ever done any investigative reporting on our local government?  I can’t remember anything.

So….what does that all mean?

Well, if the City of Thunder Bay wants to manipulate public opinion on any project, it can do so very easily.  Whether its Prince Arthur’s Landing, The Event Centre or The Thunder Bay Art Gallery, the media will print or broadcast almost any news release the City of Thunder Bay gives them.

You have to take anything you hear or see in any of our local media with a grain of salt. Ask questions.  Ask lots of questions.
