So this will be in the Chronicle Journal on Friday. What are the odds that borrowing $8 million will make the CJ headline? Will it even be on the front page? Will it even be in Friday’s edition?
Another spin technique involves a delay in the release of bad news so it can be hidden in the shadow of more important or favorable news or events. – Spin (public relations) Wikipedia
Hmmmmm….quietly release the bad news $8 million borrowing press release just after the good news event centre partnership news conference media frenzy spectacular? Coincidence? Nope.
The City of Thunder Bay Administration knew that it was going to take a lot of heat over increasing the city’s debt load by $8 million. Especially coming a just a week after the Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce report accusing the City of Thunder Bay Administration of not spending tax dollars wisely.
Tim Commisso, City Manager, made a lame effort to dismiss the report citing stats about an increase in property assessment adding more tax dollars into the city budget system. He also mentioned that the city was increasing its spending on infrastructure. He did not mention that the city had to borrow $8 million as part of that increase in spending on infrastructure.
Rob Ford said, “You didn’t ask the correct questions.” The local media did not ask Commisso any questions. The local media did not ask if the increase in spending on infrastructure was borrowed funds.
Only the City of Stratford has a higher outstanding debt per $100,000 unweighted assessment than the City of Thunder Bay in Ontario. (BMA Municipal Study 2012, page 60). This $8 million might make the City of Thunder Bay number one!!!
With this City of Thunder Bay press release, Tim comes off looking like a real shit.
Having to borrow money to improve city streets? Yup…that is exactly what I am talking about.
Then there is the Thunder Bay Art Gallery….don’t forget about that $25 million project to move that gallery to Prince Arthur’s Landing. I believe the City of Thunder Bay is committing some funding for that project as well.
