Interesting. A waterfront hotel, conference centre and cruiseship terminal. And no taxpayers dollars required? This has to be a dream. Its just too good to be true.
This is how private development is supposed to work. We will see. I wish the company luck.
As for Mayor Hobb’s statement the city might have to only build a hockey rink instead of an Event Centre, I believe the tiny conference space portion of the project is only part of the project to qualify for Federal money. The Feds don’t hand out money for hockey rinks. Rec centres…yes but according to the RFEOI, the Event Centre project is not a rec centre, even without the conference space.
You see, that is the one advantage that the Innova Park site had over the Water Street site was space to expand in the future. A very important advantage if you are looking/planning ahead. If you wanted a full sized conference centre next the new arena, then Innova Park was the option to choose.
This project takes a little bit of wind out of the sails of the waterfront condo/hotel project. Is a hotel still in the project’s future? This might give the Prince Arthur’s Landing private developer a way to avoid having to build their proposed hotel. Stay tuned.
